Editorial Review
With City Homicide approved for a second season only four episodes into the first and with a strong Australian cast to its credit, crime aficionados could be forgiven for jumping onboard the drama with high hopes. Regrettably, the show is another product of grotesque hype - but all is not lost for this Aussie cop show.
In this instalment, the team investigates the case of a murdered high school student and soon uncovers a community on the verge of implosion: ruthless bullies, sex scandals, hit lists, and not-so-innocent victims. Meanwhile, Matt (Damien Richardson) raises a few eyebrows at work with a new love interest.
On the heels of Underbelly, City Homicide, which shares the crime genre and Melbourne street setting, is doomed to fall victim in comparison. In that sense, City Homicide is neither as hard-hitting nor as gritty as Underbelly. It does however, strip down the Hollywood frills and gimmicks and take crime investigation back to old-school tactics. Officers are armed with little more than common sense and instinct, and with forensic evidence in short supply, confessions are back in vogue.
Unfortunately, this alienation from technology causes some scenes to suffer, with detectives constantly sidelined on waiting lists for pathology results or a coroner's reports. But with a talented cast and some compelling subplots, the series still has potential.
City Homicide airs on the Seven Network on Monday, July 7, at 8.30pm.
