Editorial Review
After last week's tribute to disaster movies, Doctor Who is back for its fourth full season, and this time, Catherine Tate joins David Tennant in the TARDIS for the whole year; a move that has been met with some resistance. But as any good monster will tell you: “Resistance is futile”. The season opener, Partners in Crime, reintroduces Donna Noble (Tate), seen last year fighting big red spiders in her wedding dress. Since then, she's regretted not taking the Doctor up on his travel offer, and so she's checking out any unusual alien activity in London, hoping he won't be far away.
Donna hits gold while investigating Adipose Industries, led by the efficient Miss Foster (Sarah Lancashire). They're launching a new dieting pill that makes the fat walk away - literally! And not surprisingly, the Doctor is also on the case …
It's apt that this episode is 'lightweight' (pun intended), to help ease Tate, best known for her comedy show, into the role as new companion, and there are some great laugh-out-loud moments. She's not letting Tennant's Doctor off lightly though, and there are also hints of darker themes and weightier issues for Donna further down the track. A promising start to an interesting season.
Doctor Who: Partners in Crime airs on ABC1 on Sunday, July 6, at 7.30pm.
