Breast Cancer Awareness Month
October 2008
Pink Ribbon Day
27 October 2008
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so it's time to open the calendar and start marking down the events in a big, fat, pink highlighter. All across Australia thousands of men and women have been preparing activities throughout the month, to culminate in Breast Cancer Awareness Day on the 27th.

Whether it's a cocktail cruise down the Brisbane River with the Kookaburra River Queens, or a female singer-songwriter night at West Melbourne's The Drunken Poet, entitled Wine, Whisky, Women and the Girls Night In, there is plenty going on in October. One of the more popular traditions is the Pink Ribbon Breakfast (like the free breakfast in Fed Square, Melbourne). They can be held by anyone, anywhere, and are a terrific way to raise money for the National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), not to mention a great excuse to spend a morning with friends and family. The breakfasts alone have raised more than $7 million since their inception in 2003, playing a vital role in the continuing funding of breast cancer research in Australia.

In 2007 the Opera House was famously lit in a wash of pink to mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month. In 2008, several universities throughout Australia will be given the same treatment. "Australian universities and research institutions are producing some world-class results in breast cancer research", says NBCF CEO Sue Murray, "This is a wonderful opportunity to highlight that to the broader community, and encourage their continued support".
