What is Tumescent Liposculpture?

Tumescent Liposculpture is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic surgical procedures in Australia. Tumescent liposculpture is the advanced technique of permanently removing excess fat deposits in areas that are resistant to diet and exercise.

It is called tumescent (which means “to swell”). The physician fills and swells the fatty areas to be removed with a large volume of fluid containing local anaesthetic and adrenaline. This prepares the tissue for safer, less painful straw-like tubes. It is called Liposculpture because the cosmetic physician is able to artistically sculpt the body into a new shape.

The ideal candidate for liposuction is fit and healthy, has good skin tone and discrete pockets of fat requiring liposculpture and re-shaping of the figure.

The most popular areas for liposuction for woman include the lower abdomen, upper abdomen, inner and outer thighs, hips, waist, buttocks, inner knees and arms. For men the most popular areas include the abdomen, waist and neck.

Will liposuction prevent me from gaining weight?

By the end of our adolescence, most people have produces a fixed number of fat cells, which will be with them for their remaining years. After this if a person gains weight, then, the pre-existing fat cells grow larger than the production of more fat cells.

Following liposuction, the areas treated will have less fat cells. If a person begins to gain weight, the fat will distribute into the remaining fat cells throughout the body. This usually results in weight gain which is more evenly distributed-problem areas are no longer problem areas.

Sometimes woman notice that with weight gain, the fat now goes to their breast; usually this is a welcome side affect.
